Nick Churton CIPS MNAEA – managing director
Nick Churton’s working life started quite normally - just making lots of tea and working in the machine/post room of a local estate agent’s office. It was the standard beginning for a young man starting out in UK real estate. That was nearly forty years ago and the career that started so normally has turned out to be anything but.
Things began to change for Nick when he made an early move to work in central London for Chestertons, then the capital’s foremost high-end real estate broker. It was the early ‘seventies and London was still swinging. He was told by his new employers that the property he would handle would be exciting and the people he would be dealing with would be some of the most interesting and notable in London society. They were not wrong. At that point he became fascinated by luxury real estate. It is an interest that has never left him.
After working for several years for Chestertons Nick became the partner of a thirty-six-office brokerage. When this firm was later sold to a large company in 1988 he was asked to set up a luxury homes division, based in London, for the new UK-wide 580 office network.
This would have been the perfect job had not an even-more-perfect job come along a few years later. Nick was chosen from thousands of real estate and publishing professionals to head Country Life magazine’s property advertising team. Country Life is the advertising ‘bible’ for country houses in the UK. The very best, the most historic, and the most beautiful are advertised in the magazine’s prestigious property pages. It is the very essence of country house Britain and has been for over one hundred years.
Working at Country Life was a great experience, and Nick learnt so much more about the marketing side of luxury property. But by the mid-nineties it was time to embark on the most exciting and rewarding stage of his career to date.
In 1995 Nick founded Mayfair Office, a London office for out-of-London estate agents. Independent estate agents in the UK luxury sector often prefer specialist support for their national marketing, advertising and PR. London representation also heavily influences listings. The luxury real estate market is as competitive in the UK as it is in the US. Sellers are looking for a broker with an edge, and the right London and international connections help give them that edge.
It was the need for that competitive advantage across the international real estate community that led to the formation of Mayfair International Realty in 2004. Now Nick helps and advises real estate professionals on international property marketing across the globe. It is a far cry from the post room.
Nick is a Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS), a member of the National Association of Estate Agents (UK) and the National Association of Realtors (US), and is a member of FIABCI – the International Real Estate Federation.
