Washington Fine Properties Sells Former Residence of Jacqueline Kennedy’s Mother, Janet Lee Bouvier

Mayfair International Realty exclusive affiliates,Washington Fine Properties, (WFP) is pleased to announce the sale of 3044 O Street NW, the former residence of Jacqueline Kennedy’s mother, Janet Lee Bouvier, which closed on Thursday March 28th 2013 for $8.6 million. Centrally located in Georgetown’s East Village in Washington, DC, the iconic mansion is designated as a contributing property to the Georgetown Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Only available four times in its 143-year history, the classic Queen Anne-style brick home has been occupied by some of Washington’s most distinguished families. The first owners were Dr. Armistead Peter, previous owner of Tudor Place and descendant of Georgetown’s first mayor Robert Peter, and his wife Martha Custis Kennon, the great-great-granddaughter of former First Lady Martha Washington. Hugh Auchincloss and Janet Lee Bouvier purchased the property during John F. Kennedy’s presidency. Other prominent owners of the home include Louis Mackall, a distinguished Georgetown attorney; and Laughlin Phillips, former CIA officer, founder of Washingtonian magazine and board chairman of the Phillips Collection. United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton considered purchasing the home after she was newly elected to the Senate in 2000.

Built in 1870, the four-level residence is an original grand home of Georgetown with over 11,000 square feet of living space, making it one of the largest residential homes in the neighborhood. It features soaring ceilings, twelve fireplaces, nine bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a deep, south garden with a swimming pool and a three-car garage.

Washington Fine Properties represented both sides of the transaction. Kimberly Casey and Daryl Judy represented the purchasers and William F. X. Moody, Robert Hryniewicki and Adam Rackliffe represented the sellers. This is the second time Washington Fine Properties has been involved in selling this significant property in the past twelve years.

“The search for a home of this scale, provenance and grandeur in a prime location takes time as they are so rare,” said Kimberly Casey. “The buyers could not be happier and it has been my sincere privilege to help make their dream a reality. The fact that there have been three sales in Georgetown over $7 million this year, where there were only two in 2012, says a lot about the confidence in our market.”

“It is one of the only historic period homes in Georgetown on a significant piece of land with an interior three-car garage,” explained Bill Moody. “This convenience factor, typically only offered in suburban homes, has always attracted special buyers, such as the Auchinclosses, the Phillips and the Clintons. It’s one of a kind!”
