FUNCHAL
Funchal has been the capital city of Madeira for more than 500 years, resulting from the original settlements of the early 15th century created by Portuguese explorers, who included Christopher Columbus later in the century. As well as being an important maritime centre since its foundation, it also became the centre of the island’s substantial sugar industry, whilst production of the famous Madeira wine was started there very early in its history.
Today, Funchal is a world class tourist destination for visitors arriving at its international airport or on one of the large number of cruise ships which regard it as an essential element of their itinerary. It is no surprise, therefore, that the city has hotels, restaurants, clubs, bars, shops and other facilities to rival those of most tourist centres around the world.
Being the thoroughly modern city that it is has not compromised the many historic attractions which Funchal has to offer, the fine cathedral and many other churches being prominent amongst them. Many of the 15th and 16th century buildings, erected on the back of the sugar industry, survive in and around the centre of the city.
The weekend markets are a colourful part of Funchal life, whilst there is an exciting calendar of events throughout the year, including the Carnival, Flower Festival, Atlantic Festival, which embraces the Madeira Music Festival and International Fireworks Competition, Jazz and Art Festivals, the Wine Festival and many others too numerous to mention.
Christmas and New Year are major celebrations in Funchal and on the rest of the island and the New Year fireworks display has been officially recognized as the largest in the world. The city is also regarded as the most picturesque, as well as the cleanest, capital city in Europe.

The island of Madeira, together with the small neighbouring islands of Porto Santo (where Christopher Columbus lived for some years) and the uninhabited and protected Desertas and Savage Islands, form an autonomous region of Portugal.
The island is famous for its flowers, spectacular scenery, benign climate, embroidery artisans and Madeira wine and has been an important tourist destination for some two hundred years. Today, it is visited by around one million tourists every year.
Madeira is the second wealthiest region of Portugal after Lisbon. Political autonomy was granted in 1976, as a result of which the archipelago has its own government and legislative assembly. This significant degree of independence is celebrated on Madeira Day every 1st July.
