The inaugural San Rafael PorchFest will take place on Sunday, September 23, from noon until 5 p.m. This all-volunteer, family-friendly, free event is designed to assemble the best local North Bay talent in a block-party setting, in this case a six-block area centered around Gerstle Park. The park features multi-group picnic areas and tables, a playground and a basketball court, which will serve as the event’s main stage.
The PorchFest concept was originally conceived in 2007 in Ithaca, NY, as an opportunity to celebrate the sense of community and creativity. San Rafael’s PorchFest will celebrate that same sense of community and creativity that has brought artists and celebrities across the bridge over the past several decades.
In addition, volunteer musicians will team up with local residents to perform on porches throughout the neighborhood. Over 20 homes will serve as side stages presenting 40 artists, ranging from classical Indian tabla to Mexican folklorico, from gypsy to jazz, blues to funk and soul to Latino. This first annual San Rafael PorchFest intends to cultivate and preserve Marin’s rich musical legacy.
Gourmet food trucks will be on hand with a variety of edibles and libations. Picnicking in the park, replete with its new playground and a variety of children’s activities such as face-painting, crafts and games, is another dining option. Surrounding streets will be closed to traffic for the safety of attendees of all ages.
The line-up to date includes Papermill Gang, Bryan Kehoe, Josh Zee, Mariah Parker, Danny Uzilevsky, Lindsey Boulit, Jenny Kerr Band, Brother Spellbinder and the award-winning MacIntosh Pipe Band.
